Using an eSIM-only iPhone in El Salvador is simple.

Activation

Step 1

Confirm your iPhone is factory unlocked and eSIM compatible.

Request an eSIM from your carrier or start the carrier's digital flow.

Step 3

Connect the iPhone to WiFi before installing the eSIM.

Step 4

Scan the carrier QR code or follow the carrier activation link.

Carrier steps in El Salvador

Use this as a practical guide. Final requirements can change, so always follow the carrier's current instructions.

Claro

Claro says eSIM is available for prepaid and postpaid in El Salvador. The online flow lets you choose eSIM and receive a QR code by email.

  1. 1Choose eSIM as the SIM type in Claro's online store or request it through Claro support.
  2. 2Wait for the confirmation and QR code sent by Claro.
  3. 3On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code.
  4. 4Scan the QR and finish the on-screen setup.
Claro describes eSIM as a digital version of the traditional SIM that activates by scanning a code.

Tigo

Tigo offers eSIM activation through digital channels, WhatsApp, Mi Tigo, and Tigo Stores.

  1. 1Request the eSIM QR through Tigo's WhatsApp assistant, Mi Tigo, or a Tigo Store.
  2. 2Scan the QR with the iPhone where you want to install the eSIM.
  3. 3Follow the iPhone instructions and return to Tigo's flow if it asks you to confirm.
  4. 4For a new prepaid eSIM, Tigo may ask you to activate the line and make a minimum recharge.

Movistar

Movistar explains that eSIM activation is fast through WhatsApp and QR. It supports iPhone XR/XS and newer series.

  1. 1Scan Movistar's QR or start the digital channel to contact a specialist by WhatsApp.
  2. 2Have WiFi ready if the phone does not have another active SIM.
  3. 3On iPhone, scan the QR with the Camera app.
  4. 4Tap the cellular plan notification, activate eSIM, and wait for setup to finish.

Digicel

Digicel publishes an eSIM activation process with QR scan, identity verification, payment, and confirmation emails.

Why eSIM can be better than a physical SIM

  • No plastic chip to lose or damage.
  • A stolen phone is harder to misuse because the line is not a removable card.

Important before buying

If a product says eSIM only, it will not accept a physical chip. Before buying, make sure your carrier can activate eSIM on your line or that you are willing to start a new eSIM line.
